Legends of the Edge
Legends of The Edge is a multi-media acoustic project featuring the five piece band Radnor, a narrator and stunning projected images photographed on Aldereley Edge in the Cheshire countryside.
The show brings to life the mtyhs, legends, stories, lives and loves of that mysterious escarpment in North east Cheshire known as The Edge of Alderley (also made famous by Alan Garner's book The Weirdstone of Brisingamen
The songs, instrumentals and narration are highly praised for their "Gothic" beauty and the music is written by Joe Beard apart from the one traditional folk song "The Nutting Girl". The music includes songs of legendary wizards, sleeping knights, Pagan festivals, characters and stories from the 15th century up to 1040, enchanted wells, loves and lives found and lost......all serve to illustrate the magic behind this wondrous place.......our heritage in words and song, enhanced by beautiful photographic images.
First performed in the 1980s as The Edge at North West festivals and concerts, the show became broadcast as two radio show specials. the first featured Lancashire folk legend, the late Harry Boardman. Also, folk/rock producer Joe Boyd (producer of Fairport Convention and Nick Drake) has praised it along with praisworthy reviews in City Life, The Manchester Evemning News and The Guardian.
A cassette was released in the 1980s with the music performed by Pat and Jamie Knowles with narration by Harry Ogden, erstwhile producer and presenter of the folk show on Picaddilly Radio. Also involved was the aforementioned Lancashire folksong legend Harry Boardman.
In the 1980s, the show was recorded by the folk rock band King's Ransom. Joe Beard brought this recording to BBC Radio Manchester where Mike Billington (Folk Like Us and GM Roots added narration and sound effects to produce a special programme broadcast on the air.
Legends of The Edge has now been revived after 30 years in cold storage! The performers include Rosa Sheard on vocals, Andy Stark (piano), Joe Beard (guitar/vocals), Sean Brennan (violin) and Mike Billington (narration, recorders, bowed psaltery and percussion).
